Revealing Exhibit Coming To Myrtle Beach

Just this week, Premier Exhibitions, Inc. announced that Bodies Revealed—a world-traveling exhibit that shares the secrets of the human body with people of all ages—will open at Myrtle Beach's Broadway at the Beach on May 14 and be on display through Labor Day. This will be the first time the exhibit has come to South Carolina.

Bodies Revealed is awesome because unless you're a medical professional or in medical school, these are things you won't normally have the chance to see.

The specimens are carefully preserved and will be shown in various poses. It's a great way to learn a little bit more about what's going on inside of your body and clearly see the effects of disease and unhealthy lifestyles.

Good-bye Earl! He's long gone from the southern NC coast/northern SC coast.

Thankfully, no problems to report at all in Myrtle Beach where only a few strong breezes came in when the boy went by.

A little farther north, they got some stronger wind, rain and big waves, but that was it. By Friday morning, the sun was shining and all was back to normal!

Everyone here is smiling because the forecast is for one of the best weekends of the year. For you, that means there are deals to be had!

Myrtle Beach Shows Its Eco-Friendly Side To HGTV

Most of the time this blog focuses on outdoor activities.

But today, the Myrtle Beach area is bursting with pride to brag about some interior action that captured the attention of none other than HGTV.

The Grand Strand's top designer, Kimberly Grigg of Knotting Hill Interiors, took on the challenge of transforming a home into an eco-friendly sanctuary for a local doctor and his family. From environmentally-friendly fabrics and paint, to repurposing items, Kimberly did it all. She had a foot-pedestal sink installed in the kitchen to conserve water. She crafted a fireplace mantel out of a big tree root displaced by the footprint of the house. She even wired the garage for an electric car.

For Kimberly, this was a natural challenge. You see, one of her specialities is “green” design.

The finished product captured the attention of Design Happens, a HGTV.com blog.

Bingo! Kimberly and the finished house ended up as HGTV's August 26 Weekly Tour feature.

Now, this is a pretty big deal, folks. Why just a few days ago, Design Happens was spotlighting none other than Joshua Foss, one of the designers who was recently on the hit TV series Design Star.

So Kimberly is running in pretty big company.

It's refreshing to find a designer who believes you don't have to spend a lot to achieve great style — and one who can show you how to to seamlessly weave ideas for 'green decor' into your home to achieve environmentally-conscious elegance.

Get Off the Mainland For A Real Golf Getaway

Looking to add something different to your next Myrtle Beach golf vacation? There's a special place along the North Carolina coast. But be careful. If you go, you may not want to ever return home.

It's part of the Brunswick Isles Golf Trail. So here's an easy way to have it all: Call the Glens Golf Group, book your golf vacation at The Village at the Glens and make that your home base. Play their outstanding courses. Smack in the middle of your vacation, schedule one full day at Bald Head Island Club.

That's right. Schedule an entire day. Because you'll be sorry if you don't.

To get to Bald Head, you'll have about an hour drive from Village at the Glens north to Southport, N.C. From there, you'll take a 20-minute ferry ride for Bald Head. AND, YES. IT IS DEFINITELY WORTH THE TRIP.

Golf geeks know Cobb as the designer of Augusta National's little gem of a par 3 course. Of course, he got a little consulting help there from two guys named Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts.

Bald Head is one of Cobb's many individually-realized designs. This island is a natural treasure and Cobb knew it. So he took the fairways through the forests, along the marshes and used the ocean as a backdrop. Lots of eye candy surrounded a pretty terrific course. And, hard to believe, the next guy up made it even sweeter.

After 35 years of being beaten by ocean winds and Carolina sun, the grass and bunkers needed some serious help. So, in comes the talented Mr. Tim Cate to give it a little facelift. An award-winning architect, Cate's many gems include Tiger's Eye, a course Golf Digest ranks among the Top 100 public golf courses in the country.

Cate worked some real magic at Bald Head — all without changing Cobb's routing. Some tees were raised 10 to 12 feet to create panoramic ocean views. Greens slid just a little so that they cozy up to some humongous natural dunes. Bunkers got some new curves around the edges. When he needed real dramatic framing, Cate built his own massive dunes. He topped it off with Mini-Verde on the large greens and Celebration on the tees. Cushy.

Cate made his work a true collaborative effort, even with Cobb long gone. He gave it his own personal touch without losing any of Cobb's. He even built the double-tier greens on #12 and #14 that were in the original Cobb course drawings but never actually built by Cobb.

Now close your eyes. Imagine par 3s with tees perched so high they deliver panoramic views of the Atlantic. Ocean breezes that play with the palms and move nearly every shot. Huge, fast greens with lots of undulations, but that don't look like elephants are buried in them. Pampas grass and palm trees dotted within huge waste bunkers that line wide, wide fairways. Twelve impressive lagoons with wildlife teaming in and around them. And looming over it all — the historic Old Baldy lighthouse.

Yeah, baby. You're definitely not on the mainland anymore.

Make The Last Weeks Of Summer Count

Hard to believe but we're already on the downside of summer. The kids will be heading back to school soon. Maybe it's time to regroup and treat yourself to one more summer trip to the beach. But where to go?

The Possum Awakens, Providing An Even Better Golf Experience Than Before

Myrtle Beach, S.C. is known for great golf and friendly people. But for the last several weeks, the friendliest place along the Grand Strand has not been open for business.

Possum Trot Golf Club, located in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., closed on May 17 to do some upgrading. The idea was to keep this beautiful little gem of a course in tip-top shape. And, while most golfers who played it recently thought it was pretty good as it was, its owners thought they could do better.

On June 18, the course reopened. And, it was worth the wait.

Eight greens have been rebuilt and drainage was improved around some greens. Several tees were rebuilt and a bunch of mounds were added throughout the course to increase visual interest.

A MYRTLE BEACH GIANT PASSES ON

One of the people who helped to make Myrtle Beach the bustling tourist destination it is today passed away this week. He was just shy of 90. And what a life.

Nelson Jackson and his wife, Mary Emily and their five daughters, created Ocean Lakes Family Campground back in 1970. When it opened in 1971, Mr. Jackson was 50 years old. At a time when many were looking ahead and contemplating a decade or so of slowing the pace before retirement, he was willing to take a risk. He chose to take 310 acres of pristine (and high value) oceanfront and start an affordable destination resort, a campground where almost any family could afford to come and enjoy the beautiful beach and ocean.

He said years later that his family could have “done a lot of things with 310 oceanfront acres in Myrtle Beach, and we’ve had many lucrative offers, but we believe that everyone - the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker - should have the privilege of enjoying God’s beautiful ocean.”

On an average week in the summer, around 30,000 people of every income level and from every walk of life stay at Ocean Lakes. What a legacy.

Maine Lobster & Vanilla Risotto Stuffed Baby Pumpkins

6 Jack be little pumpkins
1.Cut the pumpkin tops off (make the opening wide to leave plenty of room for the stuffing).
2.Scrape out the seeds with a spoon, and set aside.
3.Place 1 heaping tablespoon of compound butter (recipe below) inside the pumpkins spreading to cover the bottom and sides
4.Bake the pumpkins in a pre-heated 350-degree oven, for about 20 – 25 minutes (until slightly al dente.

Compound Butter

1/2-pound of butter at room temperature
1/4-cup honey
1/4-cup light brown sugar
1/2-tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/2-tablespoon ground nutmeg
1/2-tablespoon ground ginger
1/2-teaspoon salt

Risotto

1 cup Arborio (risotto) rice
2 cups of lobster stock
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 leaves of fresh sage
1/2 pound Maine lobster
salt and pepper to taste

In a hot sauté pan start with one tablespoon of vegetable oil and chopped shallots, sauté until translucent, add the rice and one cup of the lobster stock and vanilla bean. Simmer on medium to medium high heat until the risotto starts to absorb the stock, then add more stock and repeat this process until the risotto is tender but not mushy. Add lobster, spices and sage (and vanilla extract if using that) and cook for about 2 minutes more stirring constantly, salt and pepper to taste.

Yum!

The par 71 Heathland is the original, the first by now-famous architect Tom Doak. Even this early effort drew raves as one of Golf Magazine's “Top 10 New Resort Courses in the World” when it opened. Few trees. Panoramic views across multiple holes. Constant wind affecting play. Strategically-placed bunkers, gorse-like grasses and lush, deep rough are just out there waiting to swallow up your ball.

Warmed up, it's time to take on P. B. Dye's Moorland course. This is true “target” golf, a par 72 inspired by Pete Dye's legendary PGA West Stadium Course — a course that even the Pros can't tame. Golf Digest said Moorland was one of the “Top 5 New Courses In America” when it opened. You'll say it's scary looking when you look out over its huge hills, steep elevation changes, big, big sandy waste areas and huge lakes. This is also where you'll learn the true meaning of cavernous bunkers.

Okay, you can ease on back a bit at Parkland, a classic inland course molded in the image of British courses that run through both forests and fields. Think Augusta National or Riviera. Tree-lined fairways, deep-faced bunkers and massive, multi-level greens. A par 72, it caught the attention of Zagat's and got named one of “America's Top Courses.”
